Boyce Magandela (1979 - ) - Spier Creative Block Art
Boyce Magandela is interested in the changing social dynamics of his Mitchell’s Plain community. He enjoys depicting the many ways in which women are becoming more self-sufficient and less reliant of their male counterparts for support. He capture these sentiments in his portraits of daily life, and many celebrate the warmth, strength and power of women. With the current pandemic, he finds himself drawn to documenting the uncertainty surrounding him. By using blankets as canvas to expose a material culture to the world.
Magendela was born in the Cape Town township of Landa and studied art at the Community Art Project (2003). He works form his home studio in Mitchell’s Plain, Cape Town. In 2005 he was an ABSA l’Atelier Award top ten finalist and in 2006 a Brett Kebble Awards exhibition finalist. He has exhibited succefully in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Austria and Germany. Magandela has been involved in several workshops and has taken part in several group exhibitions, being Wood, Stone and Clay at The Cape Gallery (2021). His latest solo exhibitions include The Catastrophic Time at the Everard Read Gallery. Cape Town (2021) and She’s Not Next at the Sisonke Gallery, Cape Town (2022). Recently at Taste of Creative Block at Mae Flynn Collection, Brussels (2024). Magandela’s art is held in corporate collections around the world.
